About the Exhibition
Operation Grapple was a series of thermonuclear/hydrogen weapons tests conducted in the South Pacific Ocean and ran from May of 1957 until September 1958. A total of 551 New Zealand naval personnel manned the three ships provided by the Royal New Zealand Navy, the HMNZS Lachlan to survey the islands pre-tests, and the HMNZS Pukaki and Rotoiti for the detonations. This exhibition highlights and honours the stories of 19 of these veterans who experienced Operation Grapple firsthand. This is their story.
